Pius Suter’s time with the Canucks might be running out, even as he’s having his best NHL season yet.
The 27-year-old forward has already scored 16 goals this year – a career high – and he’s on track to beat his personal best of 36 points that he set with Detroit back in 2021-22.
But contract talks aren’t going well.
"I’ve heard them and Suter are not close on an extension and that was not going to be an easy bridge to gap," NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed on Monday’s "32 Thoughts" podcast.
Suter has been exactly what the Canucks needed in their bottom six since signing a two-year deal last August. He’s reliable, consistent, and knows how to put the puck in the net.
That’s exactly why he might be attractive trade bait.
With the trade deadline coming up fast – 12 pm PT on Friday – Canucks GM Patrik Allvin has some tough decisions to make. Suter isn’t the only name in play – Brock Boeser and Carson Soucy could also be on the move.
But here’s where it gets tricky: Vancouver’s still fighting for a playoff spot. They’re actually looking to add a center, not subtract talent.
Plenty of contending teams would love to add a scoring threat like Suter for their playoff push. He’s proven he can contribute, and depth scoring is always at a premium come playoff time.
The next few days should be interesting in Vancouver. Will they keep their surprising scorer, or cash in while his value’s at its peak?
