Rafael Harvey-Pinard is set to return from injury, but there’s a twist. After recovering from surgery on his broken leg, the Canadiens have decided to place him on waivers instead of bringing him back directly.
Harvey-Pinard’s journey has been tough since he got hurt in July, and he hasn’t played for Montreal since the last game of the 2023-24 season. His performance dipped last year, scoring only 10 points in 45 games compared to 20 points in just 34 games the season before. Recently, during a stint with Laval for conditioning, he managed only one goal and ended with a -4 rating .
If Harvey-Pinard clears waivers by tomorrow afternoon, he’ll likely spend more time with the AHL Rocket. Two years ago, he was impressive there with 16 goals and 31 points in just 40 games. Fans might wonder if this move will help or hinder his career path. Montreal hopes that by sending him to the AHL, Harvey-Pinard can regain his scoring touch and confidence.
Montreal’s Strategy:
By placing him on waivers now, Montreal can also free up $1.1M from their LTIR pool regardless of what happens next. The team is currently struggling at 21st place in league scoring despite strong performances from Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. The Canadiens are optimistic that Harvey-Pinard can find his rhythm again in the AHL and eventually secure a steady spot within their middle six forwards.
Renaud Lavoie broke the news about Harvey-Pinard being placed on waivers first through TVA Sports.
What do you think? Will this be good for Rafael?
