Samuel Montembeault will get the nod in net when the Habs face off against Detroit on Thursday, coach Martin St-Louis announced today.
The decision sends a pretty clear message about where things stand in Montreal’s goalie situation right now.
Despite some solid play from rookie Jakub Dobes lately, Montembeault remains firmly planted as the team’s number one option between the pipes.
It’s a tough break for the 22-year-old Dobes, who’s been pushing hard for more playing time since getting called up. He’s shown flashes of real potential in his limited appearances this season.
The Canadiens have been trying to sort out their goaltending situation all year, with Montembeault gradually emerging as their go-to guy. At 27, he’s found his groove this season and earned St-Louis’s trust as the primary starter.
The puck drops in Detroit at 7 PM Eastern.
