The Montreal Canadiens’ impressive goalie lineup just got a bit thinner.
Zachary Emond has left the organization, prompting the Trois-Rivières Lions to suspend him to keep his rights.
The Habs still boast one of hockey’s deepest goaltending pools. Samuel Montembeault and Jakub Dobes are holding down the fort with the NHL club, while Cayden Primeau and Connor Hughes have been solid between the pipes for the Laval Rocket.
Down in Trois-Rivières, Luke Cavallin remains after Emond’s departure.
"The Trois-Rivières Lions have suspended goaltender Zachary Emond in order to retain his rights," the team announced today.
It’s a small setback for an organization that’s been pretty remarkable at developing goalies lately. The Canadiens have built their netminding depth through smart scouting and patient development – something that’s not easy to do in today’s NHL.
The move leaves Montreal with five pro goalies across three levels, still a strong number but not quite the luxury they had before.
What this means for Emond’s future isn’t clear yet, but the Lions’ decision to suspend rather than release him suggests they’re keeping their options open.
