Training camps are just around the corner, and players are scrambling to find teams.
The Bruins have jumped into the tryout frenzy by signing Tyler Johnson to a tryout deal. Johnson, now 34, spent his last three years with Chicago after being traded from Tampa Bay. Injuries plagued his time with the Blackhawks, making it tough for him to attract interest in free agency. Despite this, he still managed 32 points in 56 games during the 2022-23 season and followed up with 17 goals and 14 assists over 67 games last year while averaging about 15 minutes per game.
Before Chicago, Johnson had a nine-season stint with Tampa Bay where he was a reliable secondary scorer. Over his career spanning twelve years, he’s racked up 193 goals and 238 assists in a total of 738 games between the Lightning and Blackhawks. Given his decent performance when healthy , it’s surprising he didn’t land a guaranteed contract for this season.
Bruins’ Strategy:
Earlier this month, we analyzed Johnson’s free agency situation and noted that Boston could be a good fit for him. Though he’s played more on the wing recently, he can also cover center if needed. This versatility offers some insurance for Matthew Poitras who missed significant time last season due to shoulder issues. If Poitras starts on the wing or even in AHL Providence, Johnson could be valuable low-cost backup.
Right now, Boston has approximately $8.64 million in cap space according to PuckPedia. Most of this will likely go towards re-signing RFA goalie Jeremy Swayman before they can think about offering contracts to Johnson or other veterans they’re eyeing.
Fans might think this move is smart because it gives the team options without breaking the bank.
In any case, Johnson will get his chance to impress during preseason games either with Boston or another team if things don’t work out here.
What do you think? Is signing Tyler Johnson a good move?
