The Bruins are finally giving their top prospect his shot at the big time.
Fabian Lysell got the call every young hockey player dreams of – he’s heading to the NHL. The speedy winger will make his debut with the Boston Bruins after tearing it up in the minors for the past two seasons.
It’s been a long time coming for the talented 20-year-old, who’s been lighting up the AHL since 2022. In his rookie year with the Providence Bruins, he racked up 14 goals and 37 points in 54 games. He got even better last season, putting up an impressive 50 points in 56 games.
This year’s been a bit different. Lysell’s numbers have dipped slightly, with 17 points in 26 games. But he just showed what he can do with a three-point performance in Providence’s 4-1 win over Bridgeport on Friday.
Less than 24 hours later, Providence head coach Joe Sacco dropped the big news – Lysell’s getting his shot.
What makes him special? He’s got the kind of speed and skill that makes scouts drool. But what’s really impressed the Bruins is how he’s learned to handle the physical side of pro hockey. He’s not just surviving out there – he’s thriving.
He’ll slot into the lineup between Trent Frederic and Justin Brazeau, taking Oliver Wahlstrom’s spot.
It’s a pretty big moment for the Bruins organization too. Lysell will be their first first-round pick to make his NHL debut since John Beecher in 2019. Beecher’s still trying to nail down a regular spot on the fourth line.
The timing’s interesting. Lysell actually looked ready during training camp but was one of the first players sent down. The Bruins have called up other players ahead of him several times this season, but now it’s finally his turn to show what he can do at the highest level.
