Brad Marchand just took his notorious on-ice antics to a bizarre new level.
The Boston Bruins forward, already known as one of hockey’s most notorious agitators, grabbed Ottawa Senators’ Nick Cousins by the throat during Thursday night’s game.
It happened during a first-period stoppage in play. Marchand casually skated up to Cousins, removed his glove, and wrapped his bare hand around the Senator player’s neck.
Even for Marchand, this was pretty outrageous.
The 35-year-old Bruin has built quite a reputation over his career for getting under opponents’ skin. He’s been known to throw questionable hits, start scrums, and even – yes, really – lick opposing players during games a few years back.
But throat-grabbing? That’s a new one.
It’s the kind of behavior that’s likely to catch the NHL’s attention, especially given Marchand’s history of pushing the boundaries. He’s been suspended eight times in his career for various infractions.
The incident adds another chapter to Marchand’s colorful history as the league’s most creative troublemaker. From borderline hits to face-licking to now throat-grabbing, he seems determined to keep finding new ways to irritate his opponents.
The league hasn’t yet announced if there will be any disciplinary action for this latest stunt.
