Blues Sign Cam Fowler to Three-Year Extension

Cam Fowler is staying in St. Louis, signing a three-year deal worth $6.1 million per season with the Blues.

The 33-year-old defenseman has been a perfect fit since arriving in December, racking up an impressive 36 points in just 51 games while posting a +19 rating.

It’s a flat deal with no salary changes year-to-year, keeping him with the Blues through his age 36 season.

The Blues landed Fowler last winter in what seemed like an unexpected move, giving up prospect Jeremie Biakabutuka and a 2027 second-round pick. That trade is looking pretty smart now.

He’s filled a huge hole left by Torey Krug’s likely career-ending injury, becoming a key piece of the Blues’ surprising run last season when they pushed the top-seeded Winnipeg Jets to the limit in the playoffs.

St. Louis has been reshaping their defense this summer. They’ve said goodbye to veterans Nick Leddy and Ryan Suter, making room for young guns like Philip Broberg and newly acquired Logan Mailloux.

With Fowler locked up, the Blues now have a solid mix of veterans and young talent on defense. He’ll be counted on to mentor their promising prospects, including Matthew Kessel and top draft pick Adam Jiricek.

This isn’t Fowler’s first big contract. The smooth-skating defenseman has been a steady producer since the Anaheim Ducks grabbed him 12th overall in the 2010 draft. He jumped straight to the NHL, putting up 40 points as a rookie and never looking back.

He spent 15 seasons with the Ducks, signing an eight-year, $6.5 million per year extension in 2017. But with Anaheim rebuilding, they traded their second-longest tenured player last December, even agreeing to keep $2.5 million of his salary on their books.

The slight pay cut to $6.1 million shows Fowler’s still got plenty of value at 33. For the Blues, getting this deal done before the season starts is a huge relief.
