The Blackhawks have brought Drew Commesso up from AHL Rockford, with Arvid Söderblom expected to start against the Ducks. Petr Mrázek is likely out for reasons not yet shared.
Commesso, 22 years old, has been called up once before this season when Söderblom was sick, but didn’t play then as Mrázek took on games against the Predators and Stars. Fans might wonder if there’s more to the story .
Drafted in 2020’s second round, Commesso has been seen as a future star goalie for Chicago. However, his current stats in Rockford aren’t great: a 3.71 GAA and .854 SV% with a 2-4-0 record over six games. Despite struggling now, he shined at Boston University and had a decent .906 SV% last year in Rockford. But being outperformed by Mitchell Weeks raises eyebrows.
Goaltending Situation:
With Mrázek unavailable, Commesso steps in temporarily since Chicago only has four goalies signed this season. Laurent Brossoit, another option, is still recovering from surgery and hasn’t played yet this year.
Brossoit’s longer-than-expected absence leaves the team short-handed but they could sign Weeks if needed since they have seven contract slots open. Interestingly enough, goaltending hasn’t been problematic for them so far; Mrázek’s numbers are steady with a .906 SV% and 2.79 GAA while Söderblom shows impressive improvement with a .934 SV% and 2.22 GAA across five games.
Despite these performances by their goalies improving significantly compared to last year’s numbers thanks partly to better defense too – Chicago only managed one win out of five matches where Söderblom played! Fans might feel curious about how these changes will impact future games or what strategies could help them win more often.
