The NHL playoffs are underway, and hockey fans are in for a treat as 16 teams battle it out for the Stanley Cup. For Canadian hockey lovers, there’s extra excitement this year – five Canadian teams are fighting to end a 30-year championship drought that’s been hanging over them since 1993.
The Winnipeg Jets have emerged as this year’s surprise powerhouse. They’ve grabbed the top seed in the Western Conference and posted the NHL’s best record.
Game 1 already showed why these playoffs might be special. The Jets fought back from behind to take down the St. Louis Blues 5-3 in their opener.
Connor Hellebuyck has been absolutely incredible in goal for Winnipeg. He’s the clear favorite to win MVP, and it’s easy to see why – he’s been stopping pretty much everything that comes his way.
The defending champion Vegas Golden Knights are back in the mix, led by Jack Eichel’s breakout season. They’re facing a Minnesota Wild team that’s been heating up lately, with goalie Filip Gustavsson playing out of his mind since March.
In what might be the most exciting first-round matchup, the Colorado Avalanche crushed the Dallas Stars 5-1 in their opener. With stars like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, the Avs are looking dangerous.
The Edmonton Oilers, still stinging from last year’s Stanley Cup Finals loss, are hoping Connor McDavid can lead them back to the big stage. But first, they’ll need to get past a tough Los Angeles Kings defense.
Over in the East, the Washington Capitals grabbed the top seed while Alex Ovechkin was busy making history by passing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record. They’re matched up against Montreal, who barely squeaked into the playoffs.
The all-Canadian battle between Toronto and Ottawa has everyone up north talking. The Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner put up over 100 points this season, while Ottawa’s been struggling to find the back of the net.
In Florida, we’ve got a sunshine state showdown between Tampa Bay and Florida. The Lightning, with scoring machine Nikita Kucherov, led the league in goals this year.
