The NHL’s biggest showdown is about to get even more exciting with a historic rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup Final. The Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers will face off again starting Wednesday, June 4, in what promises to be an epic battle for hockey’s ultimate prize.
Last year’s series was one for the books. The Panthers jumped out to what seemed like an unbeatable 3-0 lead, but the Oilers showed incredible heart, forcing a Game 7 that Florida barely won 2-1.
Now they’re back at it again.
The Panthers are hunting for their second straight Cup, while the Oilers are trying to end a 34-year championship drought. There’s even bigger stakes for Edmonton – no Canadian team has lifted the Cup since Montreal did it back in 1992.
Both teams fought hard to get here. Florida knocked out Tampa Bay, Washington, and Carolina, while Edmonton powered through Los Angeles, Vegas, and Dallas.
The Oilers’ offense has been absolutely on fire this postseason. Connor McDavid leads all playoff scorers with 26 points, with teammate Leon Draisaitl right behind him at 25. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has chipped in 18 points of his own.
But don’t count out Florida’s Sam Bennett, who’s leading everyone with 10 goals this postseason.
Between the pipes, it’s a battle of the hot hands. Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky has been rock-solid with a .912 save percentage, while Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner isn’t far behind at .904. They’ve each posted three shutouts in these playoffs.
The only major difference from last year? Edmonton will likely be missing Zach Hyman, who’s recovering from surgery after getting hurt in the Dallas series.
