Avalanche Signs National Champion Defenseman

The Colorado Avalanche have signed defenseman Sean Behrens, a recent University of Denver national champion, to a three-year entry-level contract starting in the 2024-25 season, after he completes this season on an amateur try-out with the Colorado Eagles.

The Colorado Avalanche have just inked a deal with Sean Behrens, a standout defenseman from the University of Denver. It’s a three-year contract that kicks off in the 2024-25 season. Before that, Behrens is set to join the Colorado Eagles for an amateur try-out, playing their last two games of the regular season this weekend.

Behrens is riding high from a national championship victory with the University of Denver. Over the past three seasons, he’s really made his mark. This season, he was a powerhouse on defense, scoring 31 points in 44 games and snagging top-pair minutes.

His college career? Impressive. Behrens racked up 81 points in 112 games. That makes him the third-highest scoring defender for Denver since 2016, trailing only Ian Mitchell and Mike Benning. The Colorado Avalanche saw his potential early, drafting him in the second round back in 2021 after a couple of standout, albeit controversial, seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program.

Behrens played a crucial role at the NTDP, showcasing his skills alongside Luke Hughes. Despite his small stature, which some scouts frowned upon, Behrens proved them wrong in college. He bulked up, adding a mix of grit, strength, and defensive savvy to his game. And it shows, especially with his team-leading 70 blocked shots this season.

On the ice, Behrens is a triple threat. He can dangle, pass, and hit with the best of them. Transitioning to the pros will be tough, no doubt. But Behrens has the potential to thrive, especially in an Avalanche system known for nurturing talents like Samuel Girard and Tyson Barrie, who aren’t exactly giants themselves.
