Anze Kopitar Announces 2026 Retirement from LA Kings

Anze Kopitar, one of hockey’s most respected players, has decided to hang up his skates after next season. The Los Angeles Kings captain made the announcement Thursday, just after turning 38.

It’ll mark the end of an incredible 20-year run – all with the same team.

The Slovenian star has been the heart and soul of the Kings since 2006, helping lead them to two Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014. But his impact goes way beyond just winning titles.

He’s already the Kings’ all-time leader in games played (1,454) and assists (838). And he’s got a chance to make even more history – he’s just 30 points away from passing Marcel Dionne as the team’s all-time scoring leader.

Even as he approaches 40, Kopitar isn’t slowing down much. Last season he was still one of the Kings’ best players, putting up 67 points and coming through in clutch moments with seven game-winning goals.

Back in 2005, the Kings took a chance on a talented kid from Slovenia with the 11th overall pick. It turned out to be one of the best decisions they’ve ever made.

Kopitar made history right away, becoming the first Slovenian player ever to make it to the NHL. Back home, he’s pretty much a national hero.

What makes him really special is how he plays the game. He’s not just about scoring – he’s one of the best defensive forwards ever. The NHL has recognized this twice, giving him the Selke Trophy in 2016 and 2018 for being the league’s top defensive forward.

He’s also known as one of hockey’s true gentlemen. The Lady Byng Trophy, given for sportsmanship and skilled play, has found its way to his trophy case three times – including twice in the last three years.

The Kings signed him to a two-year extension in 2023, giving him the perfect runway for a farewell tour next season. For Los Angeles fans, it’ll be one last chance to watch one of the greatest players in franchise history do what he does best.
