Alex Ovechkin is just three goals away from making hockey history.
The Washington Capitals superstar scored his 892nd career goal on Wednesday night, bringing him tantalizingly close to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL record of 894.
It was vintage Ovi. During a five-on-three power play against the Carolina Hurricanes, he unleashed his trademark one-timer from his favorite spot – the left faceoff circle. Goalie Frederik Andersen never had a chance.
“The Great Eight” has been chasing Gretzky’s seemingly untouchable record for 19 seasons. Now he’s on the verge of doing what many thought impossible.
What makes this even more remarkable? Gretzky needed just 1,487 games to set the record. Ovechkin has played 1,402 games and counting.
The 38-year-old Russian sniper could make history any day now. The Capitals have three home games next week, giving their captain a chance to break the record in front of the DC faithful.
Hockey fans around the world are holding their breath. The greatest goal scorer of this generation is about to become the greatest of all time.
